Jack White has an affinity for Valco made guitars, and MGR Winnipeg kind of does too.
This T and C is Valco's answer to the Gibson Les Paul: Made in Chicago
serial number: X72190
The serial number begins with "X" thus indicating it was produced by the Chicago-based Valco company, in 1957.
Description & Features (Late 1950s Nationals)
- Model Position: Often considered a top-tier instrument, it was Valco's answer to the Gibson Les Paul.
- Body: Solidbody construction, finished in a distinct pastel yellow, featuring a unique, contoured shape.
- Pickups: Equipped with two large "humbucker-sized" single-coil pickups, featuring large ceramic magnets that provide a clear, bright, and highly articulate tone.
- Electronics: volume knob, tone knob, and a 3-way selector switch - with continuous blending feature - unique.
- Neck & Fretboard: Bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard with pearloid, often abalone, block inlays. The neck profile is typically described as a "chunky C" or "soft V".
- Hardware: Kluson tuners with butterfly buttons, and a specialized bridge/tailpiece.
- X-Series (1957-1959)
- While these Valco pickups often appeared to be humbucker-sized, these pickups were actually high-output single-coil units designed by Ralph Keller, sometimes referred to as "Vista-Tone" or "Vistatone" pickups.
Key Facts About 1950s Valco Pickups
- Appearance: They are often called "fauxbuckers" because their large chrome covers resemble humbuckers, but they house a single coil.
- Sound: They are known for a "raunchy," aggressive sound with high output, often described as a beefier single-coil tone rather than the warmer, darker sound of a humbucker.
- Construction: These single coils often utilized large, wide coils and magnets, sometimes featuring a distinctive plate with multiple adjustment screws on the side.
- Usage: They were standard on many 1950s Supro and National models.
These instruments are considered rare and highly desirable for their unique, "sleeper" vibe and exceptional build quality of that era.
This guitar is in very good condition, plays beautifully with nice low action.
