Used AEA KU5A Active Supercardioid Ribbon Microphone

Description

The AEA KU5A is a professional active supercardioid ribbon microphone designed to combine the smooth, natural character associated with ribbon microphones with the focused pickup and practical output level needed for modern studio and live applications. Unlike traditional figure-8 ribbon designs, the KU5A's supercardioid pattern provides strong directionality and useful rejection, making it particularly effective when isolation is important.

Its active electronics provide a healthy output and make the microphone less dependent on extremely high-gain specialty preamps than many passive ribbons. The KU5A requires 48V phantom power, allowing it to integrate easily with professional audio interfaces, consoles, and microphone preamps that provide standard phantom power.

In the studio, the KU5A is an excellent choice for electric guitar cabinets, brass, vocals, percussion, drums, room recording, and other sources where a smooth top end and controlled pickup pattern are desirable. Guitar cabinets are an especially natural application: the ribbon design can help capture the body and midrange weight of an amplifier while smoothing the aggressive high-frequency edge that some condenser microphones can emphasize.

The supercardioid pattern is also useful in rooms where engineers want to reduce unwanted reflections or bleed from nearby instruments. This makes the KU5A particularly attractive for multi-instrument sessions, live tracking, compact recording spaces, and stage environments where a traditional bidirectional ribbon may capture too much sound from behind the microphone.

For engineers looking for a ribbon microphone that can serve as a practical everyday recording tool rather than a highly specialized studio piece, the KU5A offers an excellent combination of ribbon character, active output, directional control, and rugged professional construction.
