Used Vintage Oberheim Matrix-1000 Analog Rackmount Synthesizer

Description

The Oberheim Matrix-1000 is a classic vintage analog rackmount synthesizer that packs the unmistakable Oberheim sound into a compact 1U rack module. Introduced in 1987 and based on the voice architecture of the Matrix-6, the Matrix-1000 has become a highly sought-after option for musicians and producers looking for authentic vintage Oberheim tones without the footprint of a full-size keyboard.

At its core is a 6-voice analog synthesizer architecture with two digitally controlled analog oscillators per voice. Each voice also includes a resonant low-pass filter, VCAs, multiple envelope generators, LFOs, and Oberheim's powerful Matrix Modulation system. The result is a huge range of classic analog sounds—from lush pads and sweeping textures to punchy basses, expressive leads, brass, strings, effects, and evolving atmospheric sounds.

As the name suggests, the Matrix-1000 gives you access to an enormous library of 1,000 onboard sounds. Of those, 800 are factory presets and 200 are user-programmable memory locations. Sounds can be quickly selected from the front panel, making the unit exceptionally useful when you want immediate access to a large collection of vintage analog tones.

For deeper programming, the Matrix-1000 can be edited externally through MIDI and System Exclusive data, opening up extensive sound-design possibilities. Pairing it with a compatible software editor or hardware MIDI controller makes it possible to dive into the synth architecture and create custom patches rather than relying solely on the factory sounds.

Studio Use

In a recording studio, the Matrix-1000 is an excellent source of vintage analog pads, basses, leads, synth brass, strings, ambient textures, sound effects, and layered keyboard parts. Its compact rack format makes it easy to integrate into a MIDI-based hardware setup alongside modern synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers, and a DAW.

The Matrix-1000 is especially useful for producers looking to add genuine late-'80s Oberheim analog character to electronic music, synth-pop, ambient, new wave, soundtrack work, indie music, hip-hop, and modern productions that benefit from warm vintage synth textures.

With its authentic Oberheim architecture, massive preset library, flexible modulation capabilities, and compact rackmount design, the Matrix-1000 remains a fantastic piece of vintage studio equipment for both collectors and working musicians.
