As one of the most legendary tape delays ever created, the RE-501 is the final model in Roland's line of electro-mechanical effect processors. Featuring built-in chorus, spring reverb, and noise reduction, this unit produces such rich sounds that it's difficult to use anything else after experiencing it.
This device includes a specialized tape recorder capable of generating delay effects, also known as echoes, along with a spring reverb and a chorus effect. To produce the delay effects, incoming audio is recorded onto a loop of magnetic tape, then played back through one or more playback heads before being erased by the new incoming audio when the loop restarts. The delay time between echo repeats is controlled by adjusting the tape speed, while the length or intensity of the echo effect is modified by altering the amount of echo signal fed back into the pre-echo signal.
