Used Alesis DataDisk MIDI Data Recorder / SysEx Backup Unit w/ PSU

Alesis DataDisk designed as a dedicated MIDI data recorder and backup unit, allowing musicians to store and recall system exclusive (SysEx) data and MIDI sequences directly to floppy disk. It operates as a “direct MIDI-to-disk” system, recording and playing back data in real time without needing internal memory buffering, making it useful for live rigs and vintage setups.

Primarily used for backing up patches from synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers, the DataDisk can capture and restore large SysEx dumps that many older devices rely on. It also functions as a simple MIDI recorder/sequencer, often described as a “MIDI tape recorder” that records and plays back performance data with minimal processing.

Built around a 3.5" floppy disk system, it stores data externally rather than internally, which made it a valuable tool in late-’80s and early-’90s studios before modern computer-based workflows. A niche but powerful vintage utility, it remains useful for maintaining and interfacing with legacy MIDI gear or archival setups where SysEx management is required.
