Overview

The Univox Effector is a rare and highly unusual vintage Japanese electric guitar, produced in the late 1960s (circa 1967–1969) during the golden era of Univox imports. These guitars were built in Japan, most commonly attributed to the Matsumoku factory, and are best known for their onboard effects system, futuristic control layout, and unmistakable “lawsuit-era” styling.

What sets the Effector apart is its built-in effects module, featuring onboard fuzz, tremolo, echo simulation, wah-style filtering, phase switching, and headphone output, all controlled directly from the guitar’s oversized pickguard panel. This design was aimed at players experimenting with early effects without needing external pedals — a very forward-thinking concept for the time.

This example features a sunburst finish, dual humbucking pickups, a set neck construction, and a large control panel loaded with sliders, switches, and rotary knobs labeled for effects and speed control. These guitars are now sought after by collectors, experimental players, and vintage enthusiasts due to their rarity and unique functionality.
