Overview

This Kay 4-string tenor banjo features the classic engraved eagle resonator design on the back, a distinctive look commonly seen on Kay-branded banjos produced during the 1970s import era. The original Kay company in Chicago closed in 1968 and the brand name was later revived for imported instruments, many of which were built in Japan or other parts of Asia.

The tenor configuration (four strings with a shorter neck) is traditionally used for jazz, Irish folk, and Dixieland styles, typically tuned CGDA or GDAE depending on the player’s preference. This banjo has a resonator back for added projection and volume, along with geared tuners for stable tuning and easy adjustment.

The engraved eagle design on the resonator gives this instrument a vintage Americana aesthetic that stands out visually while delivering the bright, punchy tone tenor banjos are known for.
