REINHART EFFECTS SMILING FRIENDS – MODIFIED FUZZ FACE-STYLE FUZZ

Classic Fuzz Face character with more control over how wild things get.

The Reinhart Effects Smiling Friends is a locally built boutique fuzz based around a modified MXR Classic 108 Fuzz-style circuit, itself rooted in the legendary Fuzz Face design.

Rather than simply recreating the circuit, Reinhart has added a couple of extremely useful tweaks that make this version considerably more flexible.

The big addition is the Voltage control. This takes the circuit's internal bias adjustment and puts it right on the front of the pedal. Turn it one way for a fuller, more traditional fuzz response, or turn it counterclockwise to progressively starve the circuit for increasingly sputtery, gated and broken-up fuzz textures.

That means the Smiling Friends can cover much more ground than a straightforward vintage-style fuzz—from thick, sustaining classic fuzz tones to nasty, dying-battery-style splatter.

It also features a switchable input buffer that operates independently from the fuzz circuit. Vintage-style fuzz circuits can be extremely sensitive to what comes before them in a signal chain, so having direct control over the buffer makes this especially useful on a modern pedalboard.

The volume circuit has also been modified with a linear-taper control for a different and more even response across the knob's range.

CONTROLS:

Volume – Controls the pedal's overall output level.

Fuzz – Controls the amount and intensity of fuzz.

Voltage – Adjusts the fuzz circuit's bias. Turning the control farther counterclockwise produces increasingly sputtery and gated fuzz characteristics.

Buffer Toggle – Independently engages or disengages the input buffer.

As shown in the photos, the handmade finish has some natural texture and small cosmetic irregularities associated with its small-batch construction. These are cosmetic and part of the individual character of the pedal.

This is a particularly fun take on the Fuzz Face formula because it doesn't lock you into one vintage fuzz sound. Dial it smooth and full, or start starving the circuit with the Voltage control and take it into gated, sputtering chaos.
